CAROL:

What? Who does he think he is?

SECRETARY:

He owns me. I'm his slave.

CAROL:

The woman's rights candidate keeps a
woman in chains, and you, you put
up with it?

SECRETARY:

I'm afraid I have to. I could go to
the police, of course, but I'm a drug
addict and they will just put me in jail.

CAROL:

But he can't treat you like this.

SECRETARY:

Yes, he can. He can do anything he wants
with me. If I don't do what he says
he won't give me anymore drugs.

Oh, don't look at me like that. I used to
be just like you. I wanted to work for
woman's rights and human justice and a
hundred other things. I thought if we
could just get the laws changed it would be
a different world, but the work got to be
too tiring and I started taking things to
pep me up. I knew I could handle it because
I had always handled everything else.
The next thing I knew I was hooked.

CAROL:

You must want to kill him.

SECRETARY:

If I killed him, I wouldn't be able
to get any more drugs.

CAROL:

But this man can't be allowed to do this.
